St. George Temple - Sepia

I had heard about the St. George Temple for years before I ever visited. There are some interesting stories about the Temple site being located on swampy land and the use of a large cannon in the construction. There is a funny faith-promoting rumor about Brigham Young being dissatisfied with the "squatty" look of the original tower and the subsequent lightning strike that damaged the tower. It was replaced with a taller tower, more to Brigham Young's liking. It's the oldest operating Temple and some of my ancestors traveled from northern Arizona to St. George along the Honeymoon Trail to get to the Temple.
There's a nice little Visitors' Center on the southeast corner of the Temple lot and it just happens to be in the best spot for photography. I had my big tripod and ladder right up against the Visitors' Center and the missionaries there were nice enough to keep anyone from opening the door and knocking me over.
This image was made after a storm had come through and only the wispy clouds remained. The dark sky in the upper part of the image is the result of the method of converting from color to black & white in Photoshop. There are countless ways to get to black & white, but I sometimes prefer the effect which darkens the blue areas of the image, giving greater contrast between sky and cloud. It's reminiscent of some black & white Ansel Adams images, made during the middle of the day, where the sky looks almost black. He used filters and darkroom techniques to achieve that effect - today Photoshop is the preferred tool.
The tools and methods are incidental to achieving a dramatic image that draws the viewer in and evokes some emotional response.

    Dear Brother Webb,
I love this picture! I walked into Deseret Book in Cedar City and saw this on the wall (its first day up) and recognized it immediately as something new and fell in love with it. This is amazing, and so inspiring to an aspiring photographer like myself, especially since this is "my temple." I had to get online and search "sepia St George temple" so I could show my mom, and it brought me right to your site and all these other wonderful shots. Bravo, and I hope to see many more framed works from you on the walls at Deseret Book--not to mention my house!
    Sincerely,
