Getting Started

This is one of my first large-format images of the Mesa Temple. I waited in the summer sun for the light to change while my kids were playing on the shady grass off to the left. When the sun is close to the horizon, the light gets warmer and the shadows add more texture to the image.  The shadow of the palm tree started moving up the steps and over the revolving door. I didn't want it to obscure the engraving above the door, so I exposed several sheets of film. Waiting some more, I hoped for even more dramatic light just before sunset. But, the sun dropped behind some clouds, the light got muddy, and my shooting came to an end.
I've always liked this image for the billowing storm clouds in the background and the complementary contrast between the Temple and the sky. The shadow of the palm tree bothers some people, but I didn't mind it. I filed the image away and it never got much attention. Years later, my sister Cassie wanted a Temple image for her home. She looked through my files, saw this one and had to have it. Ever since, I've referred to it as the "Cassie's Reflection"  image.
